Sri Lanka’s commercial capital
is a fascinating Harbour city, Fort houses many offices, banks,
hotels, air lines & Gem shops. This bustling city is
an enthralling blend of east and west, old and new with modern
five star hotels and high rise buildings abutting old colonial
structures. The Presidential Secretariat, Town Hall, Light
House Clock Tower, Janadhipathi Mandiraya, Gordon Gardens,
General Post Office, Passenger Harbour Terminal, Grand Oriental
Hotel, Old Parliament Building are a few of the attractions
in Fort.
Beyond the usual daytime activities such as visiting museums,
bazaars, shopping centers etc., of which there are plenty,
Colombo also has plenty to offer in the way of night activities,
like disco and casino’s.
There are also many different churches, mosques and temples
for all who have their own belief. A city tour through Colombo
is the best way to visit and see all the historical buildings.
SIGIRIYA
The awesome Lion Rock, the history of which dates
back to around 477 AD, is a summit of almost inaccessible
rock which has
been the unlikely setting for a courtly paradise of elegant
pavilions, amid gardens and pools, all perched 180 meters
above the surrounding jungle.
The story behind the Sigiriya Rock is about a father and
his two sons, Kassapa and his half-brother Moggallana,
sons of
King Datusena,, both wanted to seize the throne. Kassyapa,
was born to a non-royal consort. Knowing that his half brother
Moggallana, younger but of royal blood, would succeed him,
he seized the throne, imprisoned Datusena and later killed
him for not disclosing the whereabouts of his treasures.
Seven years after his ascent to the throne, Kasyapa built
this rock fortress in defense of revenge attack and used it
as his Royal Citadel for more than 18 years.
It’s possible to climb the rock up to about 200 meters.
Along the way to the top there are the beautiful frescos, a
mirror wall with its ancient egg-white and lime glaze that
gleams even after 1500 years, a lion stairway, enchantingly
ornamental water gardens and royal palace on the 3-acre summit.
At the top there is a wonderful view, for miles and miles in
all directions.

The historic city of Kandy was the capital
of the Sri Lankan kingdom. It was an urban and royal center
from the 15th to
the 19th century. Today the city contains the famous
Temple of the Scared Tooth-Relic of the Buddha, which was
the palladium of royalty, the royal palace complex, a picturesque
lake, surrounded by forested hills, and one of the world's
earliest botanical gardens.
The sacred square and old city
center near the Tooth-Relic Temple contain the four shrines
of the Gods Vishnu, Natha and
Kataragama and the Goddess Pattini, and many historic buildings
and museums.
The Kandy Perahera, held annually in August ( or late July),
is a traditional ritual festival dating back to the 5th century
AD. The Sacred Tooth-Relic of the Buddha is taken in procession
in a torchlight parade consisting of hundreds of dancers,
musicians and caparisoned elephants. NEGOMBO

Negombo is a characteristic fishing
village just 15 minutes away from the International Airport
with many hotels ranging from guest houses to star class hotels
for tourists. Set amid lush groves of coconut palms, it breathes
the spirit of the sea is an ideal location to spend the first
few day. While acclimatizing at the beach you could make short
trips to come to know Negombo. The city is popular as a Fishing
Village, in spite of many now engaged in various forms of employment
. Due to thick catholic population here, It’s known as
Little Rome.
The Negombo lagoon is where you will see local fisherman at
work with dugout canoes or ’oruvas’. The robust “Karava” fisher
folk bring their daily catch of crabs, prawns and sea fish
to the markets. Try to catch a glimpse of a fish auction, if
you rise early enough, to witness this unbelievable operation.
These noisy outdoor sales are usually held under the shade
of an banyan tree. It’s a gourmet’s paradise with
seafood in plenty.

Decked with a verdant scenery, after
an ascent of 1400 meters of undulating hills lies Nuwara Eliya.
Set in the heart of tea- country, this city is Sri Lanka’s
salubrious highest place up in the mountains. The climb takes
you through stunning vistas, deep valleys and dramatic chasms,
all neatly cloaked in the glistering green leaves of tea. As
the climb goes on, the herb scented air grows cooler and the
clouds crowning the peaks get closer.
Nuwara Eliya, also known as “Little England” is
very famous for its English looking countryside, the tea plantations
and the waterfalls. South of Nuwara Eliya you can visit the
Hakgala Botanical Gardens, established in 1860 (second after
Peradeniya Gardens, Kandy) and traveling eastwards through
a landscape of thrilling waterfalls, the road dives dizzily
to Haputale, which was one of tea millionaire Thomas Lipton’s
favorite haunts.
Here you’ll find a natural bird sanctuary with a lot
of different bird species.
It boasts an 18 hole golf course considered
one of the finest and the most picturesque in Asia. This beautifully
maintained town gives access to places of
interest such as Horton Plains, Nature Reserves & Adams
Peak. The drive up to Nuwara Eliya is considered one of the
most scenic routes in Sri Lanka. |
